New section, from scratch

Calculator

How much do you need?

Too little means a second trip. Too much means paying for product you didn't need. Put in your measurements and we'll work out the quantity of soil, compost, mulch or stone.

  • Measure length and width in metres, depth in centimetres.
  • Odd shape? Split it into rectangles and add them up.

What we'd tell you at the counter

Can I sow straight onto what the builders left?

Find out what's there first. New-build sections can be left with compacted fill, rubble or only a thin layer of soil, and grass won't thrive on that. Dig a few test holes around the section. If it's hard-packed or stony, build it up with Lawn Builder or Screened Soil before you sow. It's the step that decides how the lawn looks in five years.

Lawn Builder or Topdressing Mix?

Both, in that order. Lawn Builder builds the base up to finished height. Topdressing Mix goes on top as the finer final layer, so you can rake it smooth and sow straight into it. Work out how much of each you need with the calculator, then order them together.

Should I order everything at once?

Plan your bulk orders together. Fewer deliveries means fewer days waiting in for a truck. Order in the sequence you'll use it, though: base materials for paths first, then soil for the beds and lawn. Anything that arrives too early can end up in the way, or washed somewhere you don't want it.

Do I have to do it all this season?

No. Sort the ground first: levels, drainage and the hard areas, because those are the hardest to change later. Lawn and beds can follow when you're ready, and planting can wait for the right season. A section done in stages, in the right order, ends up better than one rushed in a single go.
