How much do you need?

Too little means a second trip. Too much means paying for product you didn't need. Put in your measurements and we'll work out the quantity of soil, compost, mulch or stone.

  • Measure length and width in metres, depth in centimetres.
  • Odd shape? Split it into rectangles and add them up.

What we'd tell you at the counter

AP20 or AP40?

Both are crushed aggregates that set hard when compacted. AP40 has stones up to 40 mm, which makes it the stronger base for driveways and anywhere taking vehicles. AP20 has stones up to 20 mm and compacts to a smoother finish, so it suits paths, patios and the base under pavers. Not sure which your job needs? Tell us what's going on top and we'll point you at the right one.

What goes under pavers?

A compacted base, then a bed of crusher dust. The base takes the weight. Crusher dust is a mix of fine and slightly jagged particles, so it locks pavers in place and compacts almost like concrete. Screed it level before you start laying. Most paver problems start with a base that wasn't compacted properly, so take your time on that step.

How deep should driveway chip be?

At least 2 cm over a compacted base course. Any thinner and the base shows through as it wears. Much thicker and the chip can feel loose underfoot and shift under tyres. Rake it level once it's down, and top it up every so often as it spreads.

Will it fit in my trailer?

AP40 comes in 0.4 m³ scoops, about 720 kg each. Stone and aggregates are heavy, so check your trailer's rating before you load up. If you're not sure what yours can carry, ask at the yard. Need several loads? Ask about delivery: our trucks can drop it right where you need it.
